4. Well-Formulated Spray Tan Solution

Start with one solution. When you’re a new artist, the goal isn’t to stock every possible bronzer base or DHA percentage. It’s to learn. Choose a well-formulated spray tan solution, use it consistently, and pay close attention to client feedback. Notice how it develops on different skin tones, how it fades, and what clients comment on most. Color. Undertone. Smell. Longevity. Dryness. That feedback should guide your next move. The only requirement is weight. The paper must be at least 40 lb. weight to effectively absorb solution. 7. Lighting Source

Good lighting is essential for accurate application. Mobile environments vary, and relying on whatever lighting a client has available will work against you. A portable, daylight-balanced LED light allows you to clearly see undertone, uneven tone, and saturation during application. It helps prevent missed areas, uneven coverage, and over-application, especially in dim rooms or evening appointments. Look for a lightweight option that’s easy to set up and adjust. Consistent lighting leads to consistent results, and consistency is what builds trust and repeat clients.

8. Cleaning Supplies

Cleaning supplies are non-negotiable. You’ll need to regularly clean your tanning tent, tools, and any brushes used to maintain hygiene and prevent buildup. For your tanning tent, a simple all-purpose cleaner or disinfectant spray works well for routine cleaning. 70% isopropyl alcohol is ideal for quick sanitizing between clients, especially for high-touch areas, and dries quickly without leaving residue. Opt for washable rags instead of paper towels when possible. They’re more effective, more sustainable, and easy to rotate and launder between workdays. If you’re using brushes for finishing powder or blending, keep a quick-dry brush cleaner in your kit. This allows you to clean and sanitize brushes between clients without extended drying time, helping you move efficiently while maintaining professional standards. You’ll also need an airbrush cleaner for your HVLP applicator. Use it at the end of each workday to flush the gun and prevent buildup, clogs, and inconsistent spray patterns over time. Clean tools last longer, perform better, and clearly signal professionalism to your clients. A simple, consistent cleaning system supports all three.

9. A Travel-Friendly Carry Case

Everything should fit neatly into one organized carry case. This is one of the most underrated supplies for mobile spray tan artists, and one that directly affects efficiency, professionalism, and client perception. A well-designed rolling bag with multiple compartments allows you to store your spray tan machine, applicator, solutions, disposables, and cleaning supplies in one place. You don’t need to start with the biggest kit or the most expensive tools. You need equipment you understand, maintain, and use consistently. Skill, process, and client experience will always matter more than how flashy your setup looks.
