1. Professional HVLP Spray Tan Machine
This is the backbone of your business. Look for a machine with stainless steel internal components, quiet operation, and a reliable warranty. You don’t need the most expensive option on the market, but you do need one designed specifically for sunless tanning. I’ve personally used this machine for house-call clients since it was first introduced to the market, and it’s remained a staple in my mobile kit for years. It’s the machine I consistently recommend to my students because it always performs reliably.
2. Pop-Up Tent
A pop-up tanning tent is essential for mobile appointments. It contains overspray, protects your client’s space, and creates a defined, professional setup no matter where you’re working. Beyond practicality, it sets the tone. Clients immediately feel more comfortable when they see that you’ve thought through their environment and taken steps to keep their home clean. It also allows you to work faster and more confidently, without worrying about walls, floors, or furniture. Choose one that’s lightweight, quick to set up, and easy to clean. If you’re doing mobile work, this is not optional.
3. Extraction Fan
An extraction fan is an essential supply for mobile spray tan appointments. It helps pull overspray away from the client and surrounding space, improving air quality and visibility during application. This is especially important in smaller rooms or poorly ventilated areas. An extraction fan makes the experience more comfortable for both you and the client and helps keep solution from settling back onto the skin or environment. Look for a compact, lightweight fan that’s easy to transport and quick to set up. This is a simple upgrade that supports cleaner application, better working conditions, and a more professional overall setup.
4. Well-Formulated Spray Tan Solution
Start with one solution. When you’re a new artist, the goal isn’t to stock every possible bronzer base or DHA percentage. It’s to learn. Choose a well-formulated spray tan solution, use it consistently, and pay close attention to client feedback. Notice how it develops on different skin tones, how it fades, and what clients comment on most. Color. Undertone. Smell. Longevity. Dryness. That feedback should guide your next move. Once you understand your clientele and the results they’re asking for, you can expand intentionally. Until then, one reliable solution line offered in light, medium, dark, and rapid will serve you far better than trying to manage multiple formulas too early. This is the approach I recommend to all new artists, and it’s why Soltì was formulated as a versatile, balanced solution that performs well across a wide range of skin tones and environments. It gives you a strong baseline while you learn both your technique and your market.
5. Disposables
Professionalism matters. Disposable thongs, pasties, nose filters, and hair caps protect your client’s clothing and hair while clearly signaling that hygiene is a priority. Always carry more than you think you’ll need. This is not an area to run out. Put these items on subscription through Amazon or another supplier so you’re never scrambling between appointments.
6. Kraft Paper
To keep the bottoms of clients’ feet clean and free of solution, kraft paper is a cost-effective option that instantly absorbs overspray on contact. Each sheet can be used once per side, allowing a single piece to be used for two clients. Kraft paper is compact, easy to store, and can be purchased in either pre-cut squares or roll formats. The only requirement is weight. The paper must be at least 40 lb. weight to effectively absorb solution. This is our recommended alternative to sticky feet for non-contact foot protection during mobile appointments.
7. Lighting Source
Good lighting is essential for accurate application. Mobile environments vary, and relying on whatever lighting a client has available will work against you. A portable, daylight-balanced LED light allows you to clearly see undertone, uneven tone, and saturation during application. It helps prevent missed areas, uneven coverage, and over-application, especially in dim rooms or evening appointments. Look for a lightweight option that’s easy to set up and adjust. Consistent lighting leads to consistent results, and consistency is what builds trust and repeat clients.
8. Cleaning Supplies
Cleaning supplies are non-negotiable. You’ll need to regularly clean your tanning tent, tools, and any brushes used to maintain hygiene and prevent buildup. For your tanning tent, a simple all-purpose cleaner or disinfectant spray works well for routine cleaning. 70% isopropyl alcohol is ideal for quick sanitizing between clients, especially for high-touch areas, and dries quickly without leaving residue. Opt for washable rags instead of paper towels when possible. They’re more effective, more sustainable, and easy to rotate and launder between workdays. If you’re using brushes for finishing powder or blending, keep a quick-dry brush cleaner in your kit. This allows you to clean and sanitize brushes between clients without extended drying time, helping you move efficiently while maintaining professional standards. You’ll also need an airbrush cleaner for your HVLP applicator. Use it at the end of each workday to flush the gun and prevent buildup, clogs, and inconsistent spray patterns over time. Clean tools last longer, perform better, and clearly signal professionalism to your clients. A simple, consistent cleaning system supports all three.
9. A Travel-Friendly Carry Case
Everything should fit neatly into one organized carry case. This is one of the most underrated supplies for mobile spray tan artists, and one that directly affects efficiency, professionalism, and client perception. A well-designed rolling bag with multiple compartments allows you to store your spray tan machine, applicator, solutions, disposables, and cleaning supplies in one place. It speeds up setup and breakdown, reduces mental load between appointments, and minimizes the risk of forgetting or misplacing essentials. If you’re juggling multiple bags, clients notice. So do you. An organized case helps you move confidently through each appointment, maintain a consistent workflow, and protect your equipment during transport. Look for a bag that fits your HVLP machine securely, rolls easily, and has enough structure to keep everything separated and accessible. This should be an intentional investment that makes your mobile work feel far more streamlined and professional.
10. Aftercare Cards
Your job doesn’t end when you leave. Clear aftercare instructions are essential for proper development, longevity, and overall client satisfaction. An aftercare card gives clients everything they need in one place, including prep guidelines, post-tan care, and a designated space to write rinse time and the artist’s name. This small detail reduces confusion, prevents common mistakes, and helps clients feel supported long after the appointment is over. Happy clients get better results. Better results lead to rebooking and referrals. A simple, well-designed aftercare card bridges that gap and reinforces professionalism at every appointment.
You don’t need to start with the biggest kit or the most expensive tools. You need equipment you understand, maintain, and use consistently. Skill, process, and client experience will always matter more than how flashy your setup looks.
As you grow, your kit will evolve, but these fundamentals will remain the same. But this list is more than enough to get started and deliver professional results from day one.
